But if I’m honest… 

I was too scared to go over there.

He looked like he stepped out of a Marvel movie… 

Made of pure, chiseled muscle… 

Like someone carved him out of stone… 

And there’s no doubt he could snap me like a toothpick.

He Reminded Me Of All The Guys That Used To Bully Me In High School… 

They’d call me “Skinny Willy”... 

And in between class periods they gave me hell. 

The worst was when one of these guys held my arms behind my back… 

While the other punched me in the ribs just for fun. 

And the whole time I was flailing around trying to break free…  

Shaking and screaming like I was possessed by a demon or something… 

I even tried kicking the guy in the nuts… 

But that only made him more mad… 

So he laid a few more rounds of fists into me.

No matter what I tried, I wasn’t strong enough to get away… let alone fight back.

So yeah… 

As bad as I wanted to stand up to this buff dude…  

Who was flirting with the girl I’d been seeing for weeks… 

I couldn’t risk the humiliation of him beating me up in front of her… 

Pushing me to the ground… 

Or just laughing in my face and telling me to give him my best shot.

Not to mention— if I went over there…  

She Would See How Tiny I Was Compared To This Guy...

I mean— I was 102 lbs. soaking wet…  

Wearing three layers of long sleeve shirts in the summer just to make myself look a little bit bigger. 

Girls were always making comments about my tiny wrists, chicken legs… saying they wish they were as skinny as I was… 

Some of my friends even made a game out of picking me up and seeing which one of them could carry me the furthest.

And whenever I’d see my uncle Mike at family parties, he’d squeeze my biceps between his fingers and tell me I need to bulk up. 

But seeing the girl I liked over there… probably picturing this guy naked… made me feel lower than ever… 

Like less of a man… 

Like I should just walk out and save myself the embarrassment. 

But I liked her too much. 

So I waited for him to leave…  

I shrunk when he walked past me… 

And avoided making eye contact… 

I was too afraid he’d stop and confront me if I did… 

And the last thing I needed was for her to see how small I was compared to him. 

Plus there were a few tears in my eyes… 

It happens sometimes when I’m really angry but can’t do anything about it.
And if he saw that… he’d eat me for breakfast right there.

I took my moment and stepped up to the counter. 

Trembling like a leaf because of all the adrenaline inside of me.  

“Oh, hi, Will…” 

She Looked “Hot And Bothered”...Like She Needed A Cold Shower...

“Ready to grab some lunch?” I asked. 

“I can’t, I’m backed up and have a lot of work to do…”

Her words had some bite to them… 

Like I was the last person she wanted to see… 

Or some random creep pestering her.

“Does this have something to do with that gorilla that was just in here talking to you?”

Her silence said it all… 

I was fuming on the inside… and demanded an answer… 

“What does HE have that I don’t?” 

I already knew… 

But nothing could prepare me for what she said next… 

“You’re skinnier than me, Will!”

“I mean you’re a great guy… 

But I want someone who can make me feel safe… 

Someone who can make me feel small when they hold me…  

At the very least…  

“Someone I can spoon with and not worry if  I'm crushing them."

It felt like those bullies from high school were punching me in the gut all over again… 

And the worst part was this girl was NOT overweight. 

She was the skinniest girl of all her friends… 

Really fit and healthy… 

And after looking through her pictures on Facebook… 

She looked really good in a bikini. Like “wowza” good. 

So when she said she was worried about “crushing me” if we ever got intimate… 

She meant I was too skinny and frail to handle her.

And that’s when I swore to myself I’d NEVER hear words like that again. 

THINGS HAD TO CHANGE!

I just didn’t know what I needed to do.

In fact, all I knew at this point was that I didn’t want to ‘the skinny guy’ any longer.

Here’s where it gets interesting though- in the same way that you’ve stumbled across this letter because you’re sick of your own appearance and inability to develop any kind of muscle, I also had ‘light bulb moment’ when I found myself down a YouTube rabbit hole one day…

I was watching some fitness videos when I came across a video made by a young bodybuilder, not much older than me, by the name of ‘Zyzz’.

STACKS OF RADIATING CONFIDENCE...

But the one thing that really grabbed my attention?

ZYZZ STARTED OFF JUST AS SKINNY AS ME!

HE WAS MY NEW HERO!

I instantly had an admiration for this new hero in my life, because he gave belief to guys like myself that with hard work and dedication, it was possible to go from being a depressed ‘skinny guy’ to a confident chiseled god.

Finally some hope.

As I said, Zyzz had been through exactly what I experienced in my life at that point:
  • Constant rejection from all the girls he was interested in...
  • Humiliated and bullied by anyone looking to inflate their own ego... 
  • As well as arms that looked like toothpicks and a chest that looked like a pancake...
After seeing him, and how he’d progressed from a situation very similar to mine, I realized there was hope for me to build some muscle and get the kind of physique I dreamed of.

NATURALLY, THINGS WEREN’T AS EASY AS I EXPECTED THEM TO BE...

IT PAINS ME TO SAY IT... I ACTUALLY SPENT YEARS MAKING MISTAKES

And seeing very little improvement, trying all the solutions in the fitness market at the time.

Spending every cent I had (and some that I didn’t) on different ways of bulking, all promising the earth – only to realize years later that they were missing one key element.

I can’t begin to tell you how disappointed I was when it finally dawned on me where I had been going wrong.

All those hours spent in the gym getting nowhere… The research that went in to preparing strict meal plans around what I thought were the right foods… Money that would have been better spent had I just thrown it down the sidewalk…
Because after wasting years and years working towards what Zyzz made me believe possible – I still couldn’t lose my skinny frame and pot belly.
